Thoughts from LAT45 North

People ask why anyone stays here. The winters are long. The roads can be rough. The nearest anything is usually farther away than you'd like. And yet people stay. Not because it's easy. Because it feels real. There are places designed to impress visitors. And there are places designed to become home. The Northeast Kingdom has never tried very hard to be the first one.

I've spent enough mornings walking with dogs to know they understand something people often forget. They don't worry about getting somewhere. They're interested in what's happening right now. The smell in the grass. The stick in the trail. The sound in the woods. The dogs never come home disappointed that the walk wasn't productive. There's probably a lesson in that.

Most mornings start the same way. A couple dogs, a camera, and a trail I've walked more times than I can count. Some days the light is perfect. Some days a deer steps out of the woods. Some days the fog settles exactly where it should. And some days nothing happens at all. I've learned that's part of the deal. The trail doesn't owe you a great photo. Everything looks better after the rain. The colors are deeper. The air feels cleaner. The woods seem quieter somehow. Maybe because rain forces everything to slow down for a little while. Not every storm leaves damage. Some leave perspective. And sometimes that's exactly what was needed.

The woods don't care how busy you are. They don't care about deadlines, politics, or how many unread emails are waiting when you get back. They just keep doing what they've always done. Growing. Changing. Waiting. Every walk seems to end with the same reminder: Most things don't need to happen as fast as we think they do.
